On waking, throw open the expansive bi-fold doors and, along with your fresh Havana coffee, drink in the beauty of the lagoon and marvel at the melodious surround-sound serenade from a host of birds. Kereru swoop noisily from the trees above, alighting on branches laden with ripe berries, competing with the many tui and bellbirds for the sweet delights, and of course there’s the friendly little fantail, flitting about pinching its favourite insects from the air. Nature is simply beautiful.
Should you desire nothing more than to be a passive observer, the Loft offers a prime location for relaxation, but should you wish to recharge your batteries in a more energetic manner then you are equally well placed to take up any number of outdoor pursuits, from gentle to adrenaline-fuelled.
Otumutu Lagoon, a short stroll down the hill, occupies a very sheltered position within the lake and is the perfect spot to paddle the kayaks and explore the shoreline and islands, or even do some fishing at the lagoon mouth. Bring your fishing rod along with you and catch a rainbow from this world-renowned trout lake. Remember you’ll need a licence.
Cool off here, or at nearby Cliff Road beach, in the safe calm waters. From Waitangi Road a lovely walking track will lead you along the lake edge to Boat Shed Bay and around historic Kariri Point and for the sure-footed it can be followed up hill and down valley through delightful bush to the end of Te Toroa Drive.
Notching the activity level up further, get out and about in the Redwoods, either on two feet or two wheels, on gentle pine needle paths or rugged terrain. There is an abundance of choice when it comes to routes and access points, and, importantly, also of locations to sit and chill with a coffee or an ice cream.
Winding down from whatever level of activity has been refilling your tank, settle back on the deck with your favourite tipple and watch the skiers and biscuiters zipping back and forth, and the boats returning from a fishing trip or Hot Water Beach. As the BBQ sizzles, plan your restorative tomorrow; will it be the spectacular Tarawera Falls, the historic Buried Village Te Wairoa, horse trekking or just more of the same sensational action? As the last rays of the sun disappear behind the hill, painting the sky pink and caressing the mountain for the final time, just breathe, and smile. Before closing your eyes on the day, look up one last time and try to count the stars!
Ready to refuel? Just a couple of things to help you get the most from your Tarawera Experience. Fantail Loft is almost at the end of the road, which adds to the tranquil feeling, but does mean that you will need to bring your provisions with you as just popping out for a bottle of milk is really not an option. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be enjoyed at many great locations -
Rotorua is a 25 minute drive away, and the nearest shop is at Blue Lake Top 10, about 15 minutes away - or bring supplies to bbq. The Loft has a Weber BBQ, a small fridge, microwave, sandwich press, kettle and coffee plunger.
With all that Tarawera has to offer, we don’t think there’s much time left to watch television, which is why we haven’t provided one. However, another benefit of being at this end of the settlement is that we are well positioned for excellent internet and cell phone coverage, so just BYOD and your preferred streaming service and you’ll be well set up for whatever screen time you desire.
