Harwood is a couple of kilometres off the Dunedin – Tairoa Head main road (on the Otago Peninsula), which is at sea level almost all the way, so ideal for cyclists.
The harbour itself is shallow on our side and warm for children to play in; being sheltered, kayaking is easy and safe. It is interesting to see the large container ships out in the channel but equally interesting to observe the wading birds – oystercatchers, swans, spoonbills, stilts, paradise ducks, etc., – closeby.
It is a very quiet and slow little community with surrounding farmland giving rural interest.
It is a five minute drive (half hour walk) to Portobello Village where there are the usual amenities: petrol is available at the garage , groceries at the shop, alcohol at the famous Portobello Hotel and there are several lunch and dining facilities .
The Otago Peninsula is world famous for its marine animals: fur seals and sea lions, occasionally there are elephant seals, dolphins or whales in the harbour; and for birds: royal albatross, yellow eyed penguins, blue penguins, as well as a variety of native birds and waders. Larnach's Castle, the Disappearing Gun and Happy Hens are worth visiting. There are a number of tours and information freely available.
Special conditions:
The small bedroom has a set of single bunks. There are two additional stretchers. A stretcher could be erected in the the (very large) master bedroom. Alternatively the sofa in the lounge can be pulled into a double bed.
This is a not a large house and ideally would suit a couple or small family.
NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave; Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels). Linen can only be provided by prior arrangement and is charged for .
