A boatshed sits beside the lawn, and the mature bush all around gives a real sense of privacy.
- ACCESS & STAIRS -
Please read this before you book. Access to the house and the lake is by a long flight of stairs down from the road - there is no other way in. All luggage, food and gear comes down (and back up) those stairs, so guests should be reasonably fit and comfortable with stairs both up and down. The stairs, the bush setting and the water make this a wonderful spot for an active group, but it is not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties or unsteady on steps.
- PARKING -
Off-street parking is available at the top of the stairs.
Guest Access:
Guests have exclusive use of the entire house, deck and garden for the duration of your stay, plus free kayaks and use of the shared jetty down at the lake. Off-street parking is at the top of the stairs in front of the garage (the garage itself is kept locked for the owner). Make yourself at home. 🏡
The Neighborhood:
Okere Falls is a quiet lakeside community on the northern edge of Rotorua, known for its native bush, freshwater lakes and the spectacular Okere Falls themselves, where the Kaituna River tumbles through the gorge and world-class white-water rafting and kayaking runs begin. Rotorua Ziplines, the Kaituna rafting bases and the Okere Falls Store - a local institution for breakfast, craft beer in the garden and German bakery treats - are all just a few minutes up the road. The whole area has a relaxed, off-grid feel despite central Rotorua being only around half an hour away. From the jetty you can boat across to the Lake Rotoiti Hot Pools at Manupirua for a soak you can only reach by water. Central Rotorua and its lakefront, the Polynesian Spa and Te Puia geothermal park are a scenic drive, the Redwoods Forest and Skyline gondola a little beyond, while Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotoehu and Lake Rotoma are all on your doorstep.
Getting Around:
A car is essential for this stay - there is no public transport to Okere Falls, and off-street parking is available on site at the top of the stairs. The Okere Falls Store, Rotorua Ziplines and the Kaituna rafting bases are about 5 minutes up the road, Rotorua Airport around 15 minutes, the Redwoods Forest and Te Puia about 25, and central Rotorua, the lakefront, Polynesian Spa, Skyline gondola, Zorb and Canopy Tours roughly 30 minutes via State Highways 33 and 30. Once you are settled, the property is a superb base for exploring the lakes and the geothermal hotspots and mountain-biking trails of Rotorua.
Other Things to Note:
ACCESS: The house and lake are reached by a long flight of stairs down from the road - the only way in. Please come fit and comfortable with stairs, and be ready to carry luggage and supplies down and back up. Not suitable for guests with mobility difficulties.
KAYAKS: Free kayaks are available down at the lake - please use life jackets and take care on the water.
WIFI: 250 Mbps.
WOOD BURNER: A wood burner keeps the lounge warm on cooler nights.
LAKE ROTOITI HOT POOLS: The Manupirua hot pools on Lake Rotoiti are reached by boat across the water - a lovely trip from the jetty. There is no road access, so you will need your own boat or a local water-taxi/tour.
NEARBY: Rotorua Ziplines, the Kaituna River white-water rafting bases and the Okere Falls Store café are all about 5 minutes up the road.
SHARED JETTY: The jetty is shared with the neighbouring property. If you are tying up a boat, please use the left side of the jetty (looking at it from the shore).
